Third round of OGAT National Builder Competition

Centipede for Victory

by Guardian News team, 04 August 2020

With the beginning of second week we saw the most unusual round so far. The referees decided to challenge the competitors with Themes that are seemingly impossible to build in OGAT.

Firstly the Saturday’s round featured Animals as the centred theme. It was marked by yet another absence of the contestant heliozoan who failed to show up for the second time. Then another tragedy struck as the contestants ciabatta8.9 collapsed only during the first five minutes. Expert medical team were immediately called on the scene and managed to revive ciabatta8.9. However he was deemed unfit to continue the building and was sent home.  The referees and other contestants came to an agreement that ciabatta8.9 may continue building his creation at home and send it with the OGAT postal service. A referee was send to his home to ensure the building was done according to the rules.

Despite the referee’s decision for an extremely difficult theme both remaining contestants made stunning creations. Especially ciabatta8.9 who achieved so far the highest overall score in the competition with his amazing Centipede. Both the judges and the public gave the Centipede a 9.

"When I chose the theme of animals for this round I was expecting everyone to make either farms or zoos without actually including animals. That said, ciabatta8.9 surpassed all my expectations with the centipede. it might look like a very simple design however it is extremely effective and well thought out. Some would say it is only a stack of containers, but the details such as legs, eyes, antennas and the minimalistic surroundings, make this into one of the best creations of the contest so far.

This is a truly exceptional piece of work that pushes the Map Editor in ways I doubt the creators ever imagined. It's a clear representation of an the animal described with a little artistic license to create a more pleasing visual affect than one straight colour may have might have made, and helps to disguise the edges created by attempting to create a curve out of cuboids.

"Where ciabatta8.9 shines with his technical skills and execution, Pudie does the most by bending the theme to his own idea. Without actually including any animals into his creation,he still managed to keep faithful to the theme. Although without eluding to the bear in the title it would be extremely difficult to know what the creations actually represents. The creation is well built, but sadly there are no major innovations and very little interesting details included. All the above points lower the overall impression of the creation.

"An extremely abstract piece of work. The beauty of abstract work is that it doesn't force the original idea on to someone; the bad thing about it is that sometimes it doesn't have an original idea, but in this case since the subject is animals I'm assuming this is a honey run made by a bear. The trash helps to show that a bear came through and it appears they attempted to make a honeycomb on the right side of the map. However, without a title it would be a little difficult to see how it is relevant. I suppose one could even go so far as to say it looked like they were trying to do a Big Foot spotting."
