Second round of OGAT National Builder Competition

Revenge of Akira

by Guardian News team, 29 July 2020

If all four competitors were extremely close in the first round, the second round was dominated by AkiraStrait who positioned in the last place of the previous round.

On Sunday the start of the competition was held an hour later to accommodate for the schedule of the contestant heliozoan. All builders showed on time expect for heliozoan. The referee decided to wait another ten minutes while The Guardian News committee tried to get in touch with the missing builder. However despite multiple attempts to contact him, heliozoan was nowhere to be found. The round was therefore started with only three competitors. Referees picked Technology as the theme of the round which was vaguer than the theme selected in the first round.

The beginning of the round was marked by exchanging initial words of “encouragement” between two builders. “Filthy Spaniard” and “Ugly macaroni cheese woman” were just some of the words in the heated debate between the two builders who will remain anonymous. The referees classified that the duologue as light banter and allowed it proceed, although reminded the competitors they are losing precious time. While builders Pudie and AkiraStrait quickly started to build their creations, builder GeneralGoose spend his first 10 minutes observing the competition.

The rest of the round went over in relative peace with each builder busy making their creations. However right at the end GeneralGoose was involved in an unfortunate incident. Around 10 minutes before the end of 90 minutes building period GeneralGoose lost consciousness and was absent from the competition while the medics tried to help him. When he finally returned the referees decided to give him extra 5 minutes due to his absence.

On Tuesday when both the public scores and those from the judges were taken into account, it was shown that AkiraStrait completely dominated with his excellent Nixie Tube Clock. All three judges and the public gave him the highest score. Other two contestants were far behind. Scores from the three expert judges were again very similar. What is more the judge's score and the public score didn't diverge by much. Even though heliozoan didn’t participate the referees gave him one Stage point for placing in fourth place.

"This was one of the most impressive builds so far in the contests. The way that the motherboard is constructed with different elements like benches, wires, etc. is pure poetry. I feel there could be more done with the numbers at the top. However I greatly admire that the builder came up with such a brilliant idea that fits the theme and executed it so perfectly in only 90 minutes."

"This creation has many excellent parts. The appearance and use of elements is quite clever to produce the desired results. The theme itself is somewhat straightforward, but the execution is quite impressive. Using the furniture items as parts of the circuit is extremely creative and rewarding in the final appearance. Additionally, each part plays a role into the circuit or the background. Everything on this creation seems to have a proper place and interact extremely well with the rest of the work. The one issue in appearance is the actual numbers at the top. While going for the tube clock appearance was admirable, the way there are holes in the 3, 2, 5, and misaligned slants on the 4 (there are other slanted lines that merge better in the editor) are quite apparent and don't really give the feel of a tube clock. However, the way its lit up and the circuit below (the main part of the work) more than make up for it and the idea of the visual numbers is appreciated. Overall an excellent work that would have to be nit picked to find many flaws in. Great work!"

"What bothers me the most with the game console is that it doesn't look like it was made with the OGAT map editor. You could easily replace it with an image made by Microsoft Paint. That said the entire concept fits excellently to the theme of the round - Technology. The building elements used were well chosen but I wish the entire creation used elements that would emphasise the third dimension a bit more. As I said before it looks too much as a flat image which lowers my overall score.

So, this work was clear in its presentation and straightforward in execution. The best aspects of this work is its appearance and composition. Every part of this creation plays a role into the dual screen idea, and its certainly appreciated in the final result. The clever use of lighting also brings out the final desired look in an amazing way. However, the drawback is in the elements used. There are a lot of lines used, with very little other elements to engage the viewer. While this accomplishes the simplistic video game look, there's not much more to see. A simple glance provides everything you need to know about the creation. Additionally, the theme is not bad by any means, but could have been expanded on or supplemented for something a little deeper. All in all an excellent work that gives an amazing final view to anyone, but could use a tad more depth.

"First of I have to give credit to Pudie for deciding to join and go against other renowned builders like Akira or Zpaz or ciabatta.
Although choosing a plane fits very well with the theme of the round I was hoping for a more innovative idea than a simple airplane. Some elements of the plane were adequately done like the cockpit or passenger compartment. But the wooden fence used for the silhouette or the square-container engines could have been made more sophistically."

"An airplane was a neat choice for the theme. There's parts where the theme shines, especially the cockpit and engines. However, closer inspection reveals several issues with the work. The appearance is good for the most part, but somewhat marred by a lack of tail wings and the rear of the plane just looks ended abruptly. The techniques used to assemble the work are decent, if straightforward. One thing that was a problem with this work is some of the aspects do not seem to go well with other parts of it. For instance, the fencing used around the wings does not match the airplane idea. Additionally, the brown coloring is an interesting choice, considering most passenger planes seem to be white or grey. Certainly doesn't destroy the picture trying to be created, but takes away upon look at the details of the work. Overall a creative approach that brought a cool idea to life, but was a little blurry in the details."
